Breaking Barriers in the TEFL Industry: My Journey and Why TeachAsia Connect Was Born

In most cases, people who have the best chance of finding placements in the TEFL industry are native English speakers. However, that doesn’t mean everyone else doesn’t have a chance.

Before I started my TEFL journey to teach in Japan, I believed that I had to be white or South African to find a job as a TEFL instructor. That belief became my first barrier in the industry.

I kept applying, but because of that limiting mindset, I never gave my all. I doubted myself constantly, and there was very little information available for a young Zimbabwean woman like me. It was heartbreaking and discouraging.

I applied to more than 20 companies abroad and faced rejection at different stages of the process. The one that hurt the most was an interview I had worked so hard for. I had completed every demo class and was waiting for feedback. I felt I needed to mention that I was Zimbabwean, even though it was clear on my CV.

The recruiter’s expression suddenly changed. He asked why I hadn’t mentioned it earlier, as though I had wasted his time. That moment broke something in me. It confirmed what I had feared all along: that I might never find employment in the TEFL industry.

Some recruiters told me I was a strong candidate but should reach out again once I was already in their country, as they didn’t want to handle visa processing. Between rejections and scams, my confidence was almost gone. But even then, I refused to give up.

I spent months researching, learning, and improving my approach until I finally found a way in. I applied relentlessly, this time with focus and determination, and one day, the offer letter came through. Soon after, I was on a plane, beginning my TEFL journey.

That experience opened my eyes to how much misinformation and lack of guidance existed for non-native English speakers who wanted to teach abroad. Many had the skill, passion, and determination, but they didn’t have the right tools, mentorship, or networks to succeed.

That’s why I created TeachAsia Connect - to make the process transparent, supportive, and accessible for everyone, no matter their nationality. We help aspiring teachers prepare, apply, and present themselves confidently so they can stand out in the competitive TEFL market. Our goal is to equip you with the skills, materials, and mindset needed to secure real opportunities abroad.
